“THE FRAME LARGELY DETERMINES THE OUTCOME”

Translation: How you think about a future event/project/meeting/date largely determines what will happen.

I asked a therapist I admire if she thought that was true.

“A hundred per cent,” she said.

I don’t believe the way any individual thinks about the election and its aftermath will, like the proverbial butterfly wings in the Amazon, change the world’s weather. The country — really, the world — is, as a friend says, suffering from long Covid, and the news is largely a report of the damage. I do believe, like a drawing I made recently of a couple walking hand in hand into the future, that we have no choice. Our task is to pay attention, hope, and do what we can to help. The futurist William Irwin Thompson said, “At the edge of history, the wind is blowing in our faces.” Bundle up and wear a scarf if it’s a cold day. But walk on. Walk on.

WEEKEND POEM
Frank O’Hara, “Autobiographia Literaria”

When I was a child
I played by myself in a
corner of the schoolyard
all alone.

I hated dolls and I
hated games, animals were
not friendly and birds
flew away.

If anyone was looking
for me I hid behind a
tree and cried out “I am
an orphan.”

And here I am, the
center of all beauty!
writing these poems!
Imagine!

LIZ TRUSS: HER PHONE WAS AS COMPROMISED AS SHE WAS
It is believed that Russian backed hackers gained access to nearly all information on Liz Truss’s phone, including a year’s worth of messages. Sources say the phone was ‘so heavily compromised’ it has now been placed in a ‘locked safe inside a secure government location.’

GRIEF IS JUST LOVE WITH NO PLACE TO GO
From Jamie Anderson: “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”

BRUCE AND BONO (A TRUE STORY)
Bono was having dinner in a well-known Dublin restaurant. A couple at a neighboring table asked his dinner companion if he would take their picture with Bono. When it was time for the bill, the waiter said, “That’s been taken care of.” They said, “Bono paid our bill?” The waiter said, “No, Mr. Springsteen did.”

REIKI: A FREE SEMINAR
Reiki works. I know because I’ve had sessions with Reiki master Pamela Miles, author of Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide.. On November 8, she’ll be leading a free seminar: “Reiki: It’s Not What You Think — Why Reiki as an Ongoing Spiritual Practice (Beyond Energy Medicine) Enables Your Greatest Self-Healing.” Let her explain:

We live in a world that places more value on doing than being, and encourages willfulness over inspired action — diminishing the greater possibilities for our lives in the process.
The quest to dominate the day is reflected throughout various aspects of our lives, including the way that we approach our own wellbeing.
Your self-care regimen, for example, likely consists of a lot of habitual practices and steps that aim to create a specific outcome —- be it increased energy, supple skin, better sleep, or perhaps access to deeper streams of wisdom.
But what if the most effective self-care practice that you could ever do for yourself, was actually learning how to simply place hands and just be with yourself…
… to experience all that you are as a portal to personal and spiritual transformation in the here and now.
On November 8, we’ll explore Reiki practice as a gateway to spiritual transformation — and experience a guided Reiki session for dropping into beingness and balance, and opening yourself to your intuition and inner wisdom… enabling you to remain poised amid the uncertainties of life.
In the session, we’ll explore Reiki practice as taught by Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West from Japan in the late 1930s, discover why Reiki is a spiritual practice — and so much more than an energy healing technique, learn how the feeling of being home in your body improves how your body functions, discover why the best way to practice Reiki is the way that YOU practice and why getting caught up in the “right way” to practice Reiki misses the point, and experience a guided Reiki practice for helping the mind soften, allowing you to access your body’s own healing intelligence.
You can register here.

WEEKEND RECIPE
from The New York Restaurant Cookbook: Recipes from the City’s Best Chefs
Sauté of Zucchini with Toasted Almonds and Pecorino (from Red Cat)

serves 4

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1 and 1/2 pounds zucchini, trimmed and cut into matchsticks
Salt and freshly ground pepper
3 ounces Pecorino Romano, thinly sliced
salt and freshly ground pepper

Heat the oil in a large skillet. When it is hot but not smoking, add the almonds to the pan.
Cook them, while stirring, until the almonds are golden-brown, approximately a minute or two. Use a slotted spoon to scooop them out, leaving the oil in the pan.
Add the zucchini to the pan and stir-fry for about 30 seconds. The idea is not to cook the zucchini so much as warm it.
Remove the pan from the heat. Season with salt and pepper.
Return the pan to the stove to rewarm on medium heat, transfer the zucchini to a warm serving plate, top it with the cheese and almonds and serve immediately.
