The floods in Vermont and the melting ice at the Arctic Circle are part of the same story. In The New Yorker, Bill McKibben writes — yet again — about the seriousness of this crisis: “Beijing experienced more than a week straight of temperatures higher than ninety-five degrees in a record heat wave affecting hundreds of millions of people (authorities opened air-raid shelters, some dating from the Japanese invasion in 1937, as cooling centers)…. Scientists say that this past week broke records for the hottest days in about a hundred and twenty-five thousand years, which takes us back to the bare edge of the human story. We’re at a hinge point in that story if ever there was one.”

The immediate hinge point is much smaller: We are bored with making dinner, especially if it requires actual cooking. The Times has showcased 24 no-cooking menus that are easy to prepare. (I pay them so you don’t have to.) Favor: as you enjoy these low-effort meals, drop one or two items from your list of complaints, remembering that though we are challenged, we are still the luckiest people in the history of this planet.

If you are afflicted with climate anxiety, The New Yorker has a long and excellent piece about this emerging crisis and the therapists who are responding to it. After-dinner reading? Why not?
