Surviving the pandemic: Déjà vu all over again

The class clown and his two friends throw spitballs that hit the blackboard six inches from the teacher’s head. She’s steaming. “Who did this?” she demands. The jerks don’t speak up, and because the jerks also enjoy pounding kids on the playground no one else does. “In that case,” the teacher says, “I’m going to punish the entire class for the actions of a few.”

That’s where we are now. You and I and tens of millions of people like us did everything right, but tens of millions didn’t, and now we’re right back where we were in March. A thousand deaths a day. 150 days left in the year. At this rate, that’s 150,000 deaths on top of the 150,000 who have already died. If we’re lucky. Some estimates suggest the United States may see as many as 500,000 deaths for 2020.

I prefer to be alive on New Year’s Eve.

Because I have a lung condition — brilliantly diagnosed, effectively medicated — I won’t be making the five hour flight with my daughter when she heads to the West Coast for college. Like my neighbors, I will continue to wear a mask, even in the public spaces of my small apartment building. I’ll keep my distance. In decent weather, I’ll walk 5,000 steps a day. I’ll choke down more green leafy vegetables.

Hard to believe I have to write all this again, but there are other ways to protect my health that might be useful for you…

First, and simplest, is a daily check-in with my Pulse Oximeter. It measures two things: your oxygen level and your pulse. Forget your pulse — the oxygen level is what you need to know. You want it to be between 94 and 99. If it goes below 90, you may — repeat: may — be experiencing the early stages of the virus. And you just might want to call your doctor. This video makes the appropriate cautionary noises. On the other hand… millions and millions sold.

Masks. They’re like second nature now. To buy a pack of 15 disposable masks from Amazon, click here. To buy high quality masks with a filter pocket from Alice Glass, a Butler reader and theatre artist in Berkeley, click here.

Washing hands seems to have gone by the wayside. Maybe it’s now optional. I’m voting for caution. To buy Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Liquid Hand Soap, Lemon Verbena Scent from Amazon, click here.

Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C
This is not the Vitamin C that you regularly take. That Vitamin C may be a wonderfully powerful nutrient. But most of the Vitamin C in pills or capsules never reaches the bloodstream. Estimates of its absorption rate are less than 50%. Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C has a 90% absorption rate. Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C isn’t cheap. Thirty packets cost more than a dollar per dose. The Amazon reviews are extremely positive. And, as I say, I no longer need to buy Kleenex. [To buy a 30 dose box of Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C, click here.]

Vitamin D: Data from 16 clinical trials involving 7,400 people show that taking vitamin D supplements reduces the risk of experiencing at least one respiratory infection including influenza and pneumonia by a third with positive benefits seen within 3 weeks. Apple Cider Vinegar Gummy Vitamins: Apple cider vinegar contains potassium, which thins mucus; and the acetic acid in it prevents germ growth, which could contribute to nasal congestion. (To buy Cider Vinegar Gummies from Amazon, click here.]
