Portable Amps for iPhones

Sometimes you’d like more sound in the room than your iPhone can deliver.

In the morning, when my wife is doing her makeup or I’m shaving, a jolt of Krishna Das is a bracing accompaniment. It would be nice to have something small, portable and simple to amp up the chanting.

At night, when the child takes over the living room so she can choreograph, she’d like the music louder. It would be nice for her to have something small, portable and not so powerful that the neighbors complain.

One solution: a JBL amplifier/speaker that runs on batteries or electric current. Cost: $l00. Well-reviewed. But more technology than we need. And who wants to change batteries every five hours?

A much cheaper solution: a soup bowl. Put your iPhone in it, and the amphitheatre effect produces several magnitudes of volume. Cost: free.

For less than $4, there’s a better solution. It’s nothing more than a rubber bugle. Sound goes through a tube, comes out .. bigger. Ultimate low-tech: no wires, no batteries. Could not be simpler: insert iPhone, press PLAY.  Better quality? Purists will scoff. We’re not purists; we just want more sound.

It can sit horizontal or vertical. It’s 100% biodegradable. Weighs nothing. Useful in cars if you don’t have an iPhone hookup. Handy as a speakerphone for phone calls. Has a slot in the back so you can charge your phone as you listen. Comes in colors.

And did I say it costs less than $4?
