Omni Massage Roller

The week began on a plane, with the child asleep on her mother’s lap for two hours. Then the kid made a 3 AM visit to our bed, further twisting her mother’s spine. And then….but you get the idea — Mom badly needed a massage.

She made an appointment. Confirmed it. But when she arrived at the spa at the appointed hour, the door was locked. [Odd. You don’t call to cancel, they charge you for the session. They bail without notice, you’re outta luck.]

Who do you call for a massage at 7 PM on a July Friday in New York?

No one. The good masseurs have all gone to the Hamptons, to tend to the weekend stresses of rich clients. Only the third-string works weekends in Manhattan.

So what do you do about killer neck and upper back pain when professional help is days away?

You break out the Omni Massage Roller and, like a baseball manager putting his hopes in a relief pitcher, hand it to your spouse. Or, if you’re on your own, do-it-yourself.

I am a terrible masseur. I not only lack talent, I lack interest. Five minutes of kneading, and I’m praying for the phone to ring — and I usually hate the phone.

But the Massage Roller is another matter entirely. It’s so effective I barely need to concentrate. Or exert myself. Just roll it over the shoulders. Up the side of the neck. Along the spine. (Well, you do have to pay a little attention here, because, from what I can tell, moving the roller over the spine is about as annoying as driving over speed bumps at 100 miles an hour.)

Somehow fifteen minutes pass, pleasantly for me, profitably for her. Have I made magic? No. But I have done a good deed — and my wife has achieved significant pain reduction.

A gifted masseuse — someone with talent and a reliable person at the appointment desk — can’t be beat. But the Massage Roller is sufficiently good that, if I were a churl, I’d do the math and figure out how many Massage Rollers equal one massage.
