Flying Wish Paper

Prayer sounds serious. Wishing seems fun. In an election, wishing would win. So let’s abstain — briefly — from seriousness and vote for lighthearted fun.

Julia Lambie was aiming for fun when she created Flying Wish Paper. And then she got a surprise: “What started as a whimsical party activity has also found a deeper meaning in recovery groups of all kinds, in religious ceremonies, at cancer retreats, and as a fundraiser for many causes that make a difference.”

Your call. I’m thinking: whimsy.

I remember that at Elaine’s, the New York restaurant of choice for New York writers who valued companionship more than they valued great cuisine, otherwise serious people used to open wrapped Italian cookies and set fire to the tissue paper. Now you can be just like them! Or you can say that this is the sort of thing that physics teachers sometimes demonstrate and dazzle the little ones at parties. If you want to be didactic, know it’s called the “chimney effect.”

Watch….

There are two sizes. The larger pack comes with 50 sheets of Flying Wish Paper, 25 wish platforms and 5 pencils. [To buy it from Amazon, click here.] The smaller pack comes with 5 sheets of Flying Wish Paper, 5 Platform Cards and1 pencil. [To buy it from Amazon, click here.]

For the readers among you, here are the simple directions.

Write your wish on the Wish Paper.

Crumble the paper into a tight ball the size of a marble.

Gently unwrap and flatten out the paper, then reshape it into a tube. (Like you’re hand-rolling a Chinese egg roll. Or a cigar.)

Stand the tube vertical on the Wish Platform and touch a match to the top edge. Don’t blow out the match in the direction of the tube. If it topples, it’s easy to move your Flying Wish Paper back to the platform …but be quick!

The paper is completely burned out before it launches from the platform card. But…

WARNINGS: Wish Paper is not intended for use by children. Burn on platform card provided. Always burn within sight. Keep out of reach of children. Never burn near anything that can catch fire. Keep away from drafts. Keep free of foreign objects. Never leave fire unattended.

In the spirit of the thing, I have to say it: May all your wishes come true.

(Many thanks and good wishes to EH)
