Denzel Washington: “The Equalizer”

Robert MCall, a former CIA intelligence officer, is living quietly in Boston, working in a warehouse, drinking tea in diners, reading good books. As the Times review of the first movie notes, “Eventually, he’s going to kill someone, of course, but before he does, ‘The Equalizer’ is disarmingly quiet, almost as if it were committed to remaining the low-key, lower-middle-class character study that nobody in the theater has bought a ticket to see.”

“Equalizer 2” is, if possible, even more appealing. This time, a former colleague — a close friend — is killed. Woe be to the Russians behind her murder; this Black knight won’t stop until he’s exacted vigilante justice on every thug. And then he corners Pushkin, the evil mastermind. The Times: “Like all great actors, Mr. Washington commits to the performance, but every so often he also breathes fire, imbuing a scene with such shocking ferocity and bone-deep moral certitude that everything else falls blissfully away.”

I’m not a big fan of movie violence, but like many of you I am frustrated by the persistence of evil in the world. I wouldn’t mind seeing bad actors punished. Vicariously, Denzel gets that job done for me.
