Altec Lansing iM9 inMotion Portable Speaker System for iPods

I was quite happy traveling with my Altec Lansing inMotion Portable Audio System for iPod. It didn’t produce a torrent of sound, but it wasn’t like I was staging wild parties in hotel rooms — small size and light weight and terrific sound clarity were three big items in the plus column.

But you know how technology goes: Without incessant innovation, companies feel they’re slacking. And so Altec Lansing — for my dollars, the best of the breed — has come up with a more substantial speaker system for about the same price as my beloved white plastic system. I’m not looking to gain weight, but these four pounds I’ll take….anywhere.

What’s better? I’m no tech whiz, so I have to say it in English: The sound is better. Bigger. Deeper. Fuller. (Some have said you actually need to turn the bass down.) I feel the 4 C-batteries give it longer life when I’m away from a power cord. The slot adjusts easily for iPods of different sizes. The carrying case is Prada-sleek.

My small white plastic system has been relegated to my tiny maid’s room of an office, where it performs like a champ. The iM9 lives in the more capacious bedroom, replacing a larger, vastly more expensive CD player. And when I’m traveling, it’s become as essential as a 3-ounce tube of toothpaste.

If I didn’t already own one, I would hate to be giving this system as a gift. I mean, I just might forget to send the iM9. It’s that good.
