TODAY’S SONG
Lotta water under the bridge, lotta other stuff too
Don’t get up gentlemen, I’m only passing through
People are crazy and times are strange
I’m locked in tight, I’m out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

– Bob Dylan: “Things Have Changed”

CHEAP SHOTS FROM THE CHEAP SEATS
Think you’re scared? No one is more freaked out than the President. This terror did not strike him because he finally realized that this virus is real, potentially deadly, and aimed right at old farts who have health issues. It’s because no one else on the planet exists for him (possible exception: Ivanka). So this a horror movie… with a monster that has only one target: Donald J. Trump. Has he been infected? (Don’t believe his account of the pain he endured during the test that allegedly cleared him. There is no pain. He either lied or he didn’t take the test.) Start the clock at the Mar-a-Lago dinner on March 7. The virus takes 15 days or so to manifest. Tune in around March 23. If he’s a whiter shade of pale…

THE BIRDS
Tom Junod, ace journalist, on Facebook, noticed what many of you surely have: “I have no idea why this is or what’s going on — maybe it’s just the natural byproduct of a Silent Spring, anthropocene-style. But the birds have been amazing in the morning. It’s like they’re having a riot, in song.”

ARE SNAKES NECESSARY?
Susan Lehman has been my editor at The New York Times, my collaborator in a ghostwriting project, and, most to the point, she’s a lifeboat friend. Brian De Palma is… you know, Brian De Palma. It’s quite the collaboration. I expected BDP’s clever plot twists and Susan’s stylish turn of phrase, but not the story: Senator Bartron Brock is running for re-election. He has a sick wife and a new intern who’s the 18-year-old daughter of a former lover, and… it gets ugly and evil fast. As I read, I thought I could see where it was going. No spoiler alert, but I didn’t. 239 pages of sick — and welcome — escapism. [To read an excerpt, click here To buy the book from Amazon, click here. For the Kindle edition, click here.]
