When nothing else works, try prayer.

Could your prayers need a boost?

Consider a prayer candle.

And if there’s one prayer candle that’s probably selling like crazy this year, it’s BITCH BE GONE. The hype: “You’re a bonafide ass, and I’ve had enough of the trouble you’ve caused, so I’m calling your bluff. So pack up your crap and get out of my sight. I’ll throw a party, because… bitch, you’ll be gone.” Does it works? Here’s an Amazon reader review: “Was watching a movie and saw 3 state police vehicles cart neighbor off and impound the car. So perhaps it really works.”

Let’s back up: What’s the deal with prayer candles?

In East Harlem, they’re everywhere, and the candles cost less than a Dunkin’ Donuts latte.

Right now, for instance, I’m burning a candle adorned by a lovely illustration of Saint Clara. I’m fond of her, and for good reason:

She and her sister were joined by other women who also wanted to be brides of Jesus and live with no money. They became known as the “Poor Ladies of San Damiano.” They lived a simple life of austerity, seclusion from the world, and poverty, according to a Rule which Francis gave them as a Second Order. St. Clare and her sisters wore no shoes, ate no meat, lived in a poor house, and kept silent most of the time. Their lives consisted of manual labor and prayer. Yet they were very happy, because Our Lord was close to them all the time.

In 1224, an army of rough soldiers from Frederick II came to attack Assisi. Although very sick, Clare went out to meet them with the Blessed Sacrament in her hands. She had the Blessed Sacrament placed at the wall where the enemies could see it. Then on her knees, she begged God to save the Sisters. “O Lord, protect these Sisters whom I cannot protect now,” she prayed. A voice seemed to answer: “I will keep them always in My care.” In that moment, a sudden fright struck the attackers and they fled as fast as they could without harming anyone in Assisi.

The 8” Saint Clara candle costs $2.99 in East Harlem. A bargain. [To buy it from Amazon for $4.99, click here.] Coventry Candles — they make “Bitch Be Gone” — cost $11.50. And are considerably smaller: Most are 2″ x 4″ and burn for 40 hours. Unlike my bodega candle, they are scented. And, of course, they come with a story:

Back in 1991 when Jacki Smith, Coventry’s founder, was studying herbalism along with her other spiritual pursuits, she started to understand how the energy of the herbs and oils can change your vibration. If consuming an herb for healing purposes can train your body to respond in a different way to crisis, then bringing the herbs and oils into your energetic space can help train your energy to respond in a new way to your spiritual crisis.

Then fate took her to a small candle making shop in Ferndale, Michigan where the owner sold her the initial supplies for making her first candle and taught her the basics that she wrote down on the back of the receipt. From there she was hooked!

After making a slew of holiday gifts in December of 1991… her friends encouraged her, family encouraged her, strangers encouraged her. She made a batch of Prosperity Blessed Herbal Candles. They were ugly, burned funny, and had a label that was held on with a rubber band. She sold them all in her first go round.

And why not? Consider the genius marketing of the “Wicked Witch” series:

FAST CASH
Amazon reader review: “The candle worked its magic and materialized over $3,000 in 2 days. I promise to God and the Heavens, this candle works.”

COME TO MAMA
The hype: “When attraction is the quest ‘Come to Mama’ does it best!” Dorothy Morrison. Words of Mojo:Golden warm sultry and hot! You know with this Mama is where you want to be. Smooth and steady you Come to Mama. Calm and cool you know where to go. Mama’s call is the magnet and your body mind and heart.”

THE PROSPERITY BLESSED CANDLE
You are encouraged to recite this prayer: “This Candle so sweet I hold before me, ignites the seeds of prosperity. I call on forces higher than I, to awaken the wealth that I hold inside. May I be enriched in the most correct way, harming none and helping all as it fills my stay…I call on thee in perfect trust and love, to create abundance from above. This I make true and so it will be, bring what is needed times three.”
